earth, iron & dust Mine Statement

The drawings in this series are focused on mine pits that I have explored on the Mesabi Iron Range. The drawings are created with graphite, steel and found mine rock. Images in the series relate to my impressions of the minescape as sculpted earth.  Mine pits become objects of art, accidental sculptures on a massive scale. Form emerges from the inside out and takes the shape of empty space. The drawings in this series are influenced by chance encounters or memorable events that I have had while exploring each mine. As I move through the landscape, I encounter wildlife, old equipment, traces of human presence, and signs of past industry. These influences shape my approach to each drawing and are described in the titles of the work.
